about

Grime and UK Funky collide and conspire to create something special on ‘Night Steppa’ from London-based producer SPD and Gloucester MC Griz-O.

Hot on the heels of Lucent & Buggsy’s ‘Originate’, this is the latest in a line of genre-melding releases from Bristol’s Durkle Disco label and sees SPD’s dark percussive rhythms expertly laced by Griz-O’s lyrical tribute to the nocturnally inclined and the things they get up to after dark.

Originally making a name in garage and the more leftfield end of bass music, SPD enjoyed early releases with labels such as L2S and Slime. More recently, he’s enjoyed stripping things back and honing a moodier, more club-ready sound, culminating in a release on Roska’s powerhouse UK Funky label RKS plus steady support from the ever-erudite Keysound camp. An accomplished promoter and DJ with a Subtle Radio residency, SPD is part of a new generation of London-based artists effortlessly blurring the lines between UK Funky, 2-step and 130.

Griz-O is another fresh talent marking himself out as one to watch. Part of the Brownswood Records-affiliated Future Bubblers artist development programme, his previous releases on Southpoint and 3000 Bass illustrate Griz-O’s club music pedigree. He’s also comfortable riding darker 140 beats, most recently evidenced on the ‘Out of Bounds’ collaborative EP with Bristol grime kingpin OH91. A commanding and versatile presence on the mic, Griz-O’s link up with Durkle Disco comes at an exciting point in his career.

Paying homage to the label’s dubstep roots, ever reliable Durkle stalwart Unkey provides a killer remix. Drawing on the darkest elements of the original, Unkey ramps up the menace, with his trademark intricate percussion keeping things lively. This is the latest strong offering from the Bristol producer, who has recently picked up support from dubstep luminaries J:Kenzo, Sicaria Sound and Eddie Seven, as well as Butterz boss Elijah and JME on a now-legendary NTS session.

about

Durkle Disco Bristol, UK

Durkle Disco is a Bristol-based label with bass at its very core. First conceived as a place where grime, garage, hip-hop and dubstep could combine and entwine - with just as much attention paid to the MCs as the producers - the label has since evolved to become a natural home for the new strains of instrumental bass-driven music coming from Bristol’s next unstoppable wave of production talent. ... more
